Description of Butterfly Mazunov

Extremely fast for an all-wood blade. The Mazunov blade combines fine blocking touch with incredible mid-distance power. The blade your mother warned you about.

Reviews of the Butterfly Mazunov

At one time this was labelled the fastest non-carbon blade available. The further development in table tennis blades, in particular the carbon/balsa/fibre glass has left the once famous blade for speed lagging behind. Never the less it is a quality blade which has withstood the sands of time. Merely the fact it is still available shows its quality and popularity. It is an extremely heavy blade, never come across anything heavier. Very good for punchy blocks, the feel and control for either short drops shots or long push shots make it extremely versatile. Much easier to control than carbon attacking blades. Would not recommend to those with longer shots as this would further increase short length and reduce recovery time. Probably explains why they recommend for mid-distance loops and topspins. Dont be put of by its OFF+ rating, this rating is over 30yrs+. Ideal for the offensive minded players with punchy backhand blocks and wristy topspins and mid distance loops. I would always recommend it over a carbon, but people now prefer much lighter blades.

3rd Blade I bought around a year ago and to date it hasn't let me down. One of the best plywood blades available on the market, it's extremely resistant to damage (seeing as I've dropped it many many many times...and it's still going great!) It's speed is very good as long as you accompany it with decent rubber. Only downside would be that it is one of the heaviest blades to use, but with enough training you should be able to master it's weight and control the ball better, thus improving your game. Overall it's suitable for all those attacking / overly offensive players. Give it a try! :)

Before I ever tried the Mazunov, i tried lots of other blades searching for a composition that would suit my "Twiddling-Attack-Chop-Blocking-at the Table-Style". It was always hard to find a good compromise beween safe blocking and powerful top-spin attacking. So I´ve tested slow to fast defensive blades, allround blades and offensive blades up to the speed of the Photino, which is also a dream blade. i would have never tested the Mazunov, if it wouldn`t have been that one night were I accidently ended up in the training hall still wearing my suit and borrowing sombodys racket playing in shirt and socks. Well it happened to be the mazunov with Xiom Vega Pro max on forehand, and short-pip Flarestorm 2 max on backhand with flared handle. Although it wasn`t my long pips ox as used to and not my tenergy 25 2,1 it was a revelation, which kept on revealing more and more positive traits the longer I played it. After that night it didn`t take long until I had my own Mazunov with straight handle at a 100g. So here comes a list of why I love the Mazunov so much:
1. The solid chunky feeling gives you a lot of control, so that pushes (very important for me) were actually very controlled (TTR 1655 german Joola system).
2. Blocking ist amazing!
- Pips in wonderful blocking because it is so stiff, that the difference of blocking very (fast) spinny vs. not so spinny fast top-spins is not so big a very big number of blocks bounces back very controlled at a high speed.
- long pips ox (bomb talent) very controlled and flat chop-blocking and at flat blocking, so blocking variation is very easy.
3. A vast amount of spin! I have a lot of spin in my top-spins but I never had much (especially in opening top-spins) as with the Mazunov (TSP Pur Hinoki may be the only exeption in this field) i don`t know if that is because it`s purely wood or because of the outer Planchonello layers cause they are "power loopers" veneers. However; I read that (http://www.fbvtt.org/E-temel1.htm) the player Mazunov himself had set a spin record, so mabey there is a connection?! anyway tons of spin but much more power and speed than what I was used to, so short backhand movements from mid distance are still very fast and countertops are superb all over the place.
4. The overall control is much better than any rating you`ll find.
5. The handle (straight) is the only straight handle (quite square and edgy) I`ve used so far beside Juic Kalinic Allround + that allows me to twiddle (almost) without any mistakes and helps very much at feeling the adjustments and angels when using a forehand or backhand oriented grip. (one of the typical straight Butterfly handles, like Timo Boll ALC and such, but different to Photino which is rounder.
6. The weight - allright; of course my racket doesn`t weigh so much because i play ox pips on one side, but after i had experimented with anti, so that my racket got heavier, I found out that i needed a certain weight in order to produce enough power, so to me the Mazunov compensates the extra weight other offensive players can use to produce powerful attacks, but I got used to the extra weight so quickly that i could well imagine getting used to even more as with two inverted rubbers also quite quickly. apart from speed the increased weight helps to control the tangential movement of the racket head during the top-spin.
7. Conclusion: It comes as no surprise to see that so many pros and advanced players play this blade.
Super!
