A drop shot is when the opponent is far from the table, lobbing the ball back to you, and you try to block the ball gently to keep it as short as possible, making the opponent run in frantically to play the ball. The ideal drop shot will bounce twice on the opponent's side so the ball won't even go off the edge for the opponent to dig it up.

- Try to absorb all the power.
Try to absorb the power of the ball in order to keep the ball as short as possible. A deep drop shot is easy to return. As the ball comes close to your racket, move your racket back to absorb the energy. If the ball hits while the paddle is moving back, it will reduce the bounce. - Perform drop shots on balls close to the net.
A ball that lands deep on your side of the table is hard to drop short; it will go long and be easy for the opponent to return. Perform drop shots on balls that land close to the net. - Touch the ball early off the bounce.
Don't wait long before touching the ball; catch it early off the bounce. - Surprise the opponent.
Don't make it obvious that you plan to do a drop shot; fake the motion of a smash, then at the last second come in for the drop shot so your opponent won't see it coming and will have less time to react.
